Vision rehabilitation helps those with visual impairments to make maximal use of their remaining functional vision. Some
people are born with visual impairments, and others often develop them through disease or injury. Retinal conditions such
as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, and other forms of rod/cone dystrophies can cause severe
visual problems. Other problems such as glaucoma, optic atrophy, cataracts, and albinism also affect vision. Although debilitating,
most patients with these conditions have some usable vision but are not able to be corrected with surgery, medications, or
regular glasses.
Vision rehabilitation services can offer assessment of visual functioning, training, and evaluation with optical, non-optical,
and electronic devices.
(Due to the detail and complexity of vision rehabilitation examinations, Dr. Mostaghimi must first establish the practice
he will be joining with proper equipment and training in order to maximize patient care. Look for this service to be fully
offered by Fall 2008.)
